EXTERNAL RELATIONS OF THE EU

STEP 1. Overview

In the previous Unit, we have explored the role of the EU in managing world issues such as democracy, climate change and health crises. In this unit, we will focus on one specific issue that has increasingly featured into the EU agenda: migration. After the increase in migration flows and in migrants’ arrivals to the EU in the latest years, migration has become a crucial issue with implications not only for EU internal politics and policies, but also for its external action and foreign policy. In this unit, therefore, we will explore in what way migration is relevant for EU foreign and external policies and you will learn what is ‘migration diplomacy’ as well as the concept of ‘external governance’ in managing migration and border control.
