EUROPEAN IDENTITY

Step 4. European citizenship

The Treaty of Maastricht (ratified in 1992, in force in 1993) officially conferred European Union citizenship onto citizens of EU Member States.  This means that a person who holds a nationality of a EU country is automatically also a EU citizen. So far in this unit we have discussed the concept of Europe, the EU, and identity. How are these three linked to the concept of citizenship? In this subsection we will introduce and discuss the definition of citizenship, and study three dimensions thereof: status, rights and identity, all in the context of the European Union.
