STEP 4 THE SOUTHERN (MEDITERRANEAN) ENLARGEMENT AND THE CALL FOR REFORMS
The 1980s witnessed a second wave of EC enlargement. Between 1981 and 1986 three backward southern European countries Greece, Portugal and Spain became EC members. Greece had made its first overtures in the late 1950s and soon became an associate member. Further progress was temporarily put on hold due to a military coup in Athens.
