Step 1. Overview

Introduction

In the previous units we have analysed two fundamental aspects of European identity: European culture, that expresses the essence of European identity and European values that lie at the heart of this identity and are accepted as common by Europeans. Now, we will tackle the third crucial aspect, namely the relationship between national and European identity.

The basic question that we will try to answer here is whether those identities are mutually exclusive or complementary. That is: Can you be both French/Spanish/Polish/Estonian… etc. and European? Or the more European the less of the national identity? What aspects influence this relationship?
