HISTORY OF EUROPEAN INTEGRATION, 1945 – 1992
STEP 1 INTRODUCTION
At the end of the Second World War Germany and Europe were divided. In free and pluralistic Western Europe a comprehensive process of reconstruction took place. Its rapid successful development strengthened the nation states and made them less vulnerable to internal divisions and external threats. However, an important question remained: to what extend could old political forms guarantee peace and sustainable development in a long-term perspective?
